Prevention, relief and better sleep: why your dog needs an orthopedic bed?
A dog sleeps on average 12 to 18 hours a day – up to twice as much as humans. Yet we often focus on food, toys, or collars and forget one essential thing: what our dog actually sleeps on. The choice of a dog bed has a huge impact on the health of a dog’s musculoskeletal system – including joints, spine, and muscles – as well as on the quality of his sleep.
Let’s take a closer look at the most common materials used in dog beds today – and why choosing an orthopedic one is definitely worth considering.

What materials are dog bed mattresses usually made of?
The bottom cushion (mattress), which forms the base of the dog bed your dog sleeps on, can be made from various materials – some more suitable than others.
The most common ones include:
1. Memory (viscoelastic) orthopedic foam
Memory foam is the best choice for your dog. It reacts to the dog’s bodity and provides maximum support.
You can also find memory foam in our REDANT orthopedic dog beds.
2. Hollow fiber
Hollow fiber refers to polyester fibers shaped into small balls, commonly used as filling for pillows and blankets. Its main advantages include being hypoallergenic and preventing the growth of dust mites, as well as the ability to be washed at higher temperatures (60 °C) and tumble dried, which restores its fluffiness and original shape.
Hollow fiber mattresses can be found in our CLASSIC economic range of dog beds. However, for true orthopedic benefits, we recommend choosing a bed with memory foam. We also use hollow fiber for all of our side cushions.
3. Cold foam
Cold foam is a relatively high-quality alternative, but it does not provide such a strong orthopedic effect as memory foam.
4. Regular foam
Regular foam is a cheap option without orthopedic properties – it wears out quickly and is not recommended for everyday use.
That’s why, whenever possible, we recommend choosing a memory foam mattress to achieve maximum orthopedic and relaxation benefits.
What does it mean when a dog bed is orthopedic?
An orthopedic dog bed is one whose main component is the already mentioned orthopedic memory (viscoelastic) foam. This material reacts to body pressure and heat, adapts to the shape of the dog’s body, and returns to its original form once the pressure is released.
Unlike regular foam fillings, orthopedic foam:
- does not create hard or sunken spots and does not lose its shape,
- distributes the dog’s weight evenly.
This prevents excessive pressure on the joints, hips, shoulders, and spine. You can learn more about the benefits of orthopedic foam for dogs’ health in our article here.
What is an orthopedic dog bed good for?
Prevention and relief for joint problems
An orthopedic dog bed with memory foam has a significant impact on a dog’s musculoskeletal health.
This special foam:
- reduces pressure on the joints,
- relieves the spine,
- supports proper body alignment,
- improves blood circulation in muscles,
- and speeds up overall regeneration.
Thanks to this, an orthopedic bed works not only as prevention, but also as relief for existing problems. It helps protect joints and the spine, reduces long-term strain, helps prevent osteoarthritis and dysplasia, and at the same time relieves pain from arthritis, stiffness after sleep, or after surgeries and injuries.
As a result, the dog gets up more easily, limps less, feels less stiff, and regenerates better overall. This is especially important for large breeds such as Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, Labradors, Bernese Mountain Dogs, Rottweilers, Mastiffs, or Newfoundlands, which often suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia.

Better sleep
Quality sleep is essential for dogs not only for rest, but also for overall health, regeneration, and mental well-being. If a dog sleeps on a hard or worn-out surface, pressure points form, which can cause discomfort, frequent turning, and interrupted sleep. An orthopedic dog bed with memory foam adapts to the shape of the dog’s body and distributes its weight evenly. This prevents excessive pressure on any part of the body and provides stable yet soft support throughout the entire sleep.
As a result, the dog:
- sleeps more calmly and deeply,
- turns less during the night,
- is not stiff in the morning,
- and has ideal conditions for regeneration.
This positively affects not only physical health, but also behavior – a well-rested dog is calmer, more balanced, and has more energy during the day.
Is an orthopedic bed only for old dogs?
Definitely not. This is one of the most common myths. An orthopedic dog bed is ideal for large-breed puppies as prevention, for active and sporting dogs, for overweight dogs and dogs after surgery, as well as for senior dogs. The earlier a dog starts sleeping and resting on a quality mattress, the lower the risk of future problems.
What if I already have a REDANT bed without an orthopedic mattress?
If you previously bought a REDANT dog bed in the basic CLASSIC version without memory foam, we have good news for you.
Thanks to the modular design of all our dog beds, you can replace any part at any time – including the bottom mattress. There’s no need to buy a completely new bed; simply replace the standard filling with an orthopedic memory foam mattress.
Today, an orthopedic dog bed is no longer a luxury, but essential equipment for a healthy and comfortable life, prevention of joint problems, and pain relief when certain conditions have already developed.
Give your dog the best for his health and comfort.
